For an author wishing to advertise self-published literature, current technology has made it a helpful option for aspiring authors. No longer do you have to wait for three month long responses to agent or publishing submissions. You can now take the bull by the horns and step into the world of self-publishing, and best of all it’s doesn’t require the use of a professional.

Websites who now advertise eBooks include Smashwords, Kindle, andGoogle; however, some of them are strict on what they publish, and their policy may not allow full frontal nudity on a cover. However, getting your novel to a published standard is down to you. Many authors will advertise for a proofreader or editor, and Gumtree or Craigslist are useful sites to place an ad.

Contacting your local library and requesting to use their facilities one evening is a great option if you have recently published a paperback novel and want to engage with your audience. This may or may not apply a fee. In addition, other options to advertise a self-published novel includes through a local radio station, on pens and apparel, or through a personalized website.

How To Publish and Market A Paperback

Lulu and CreateSpace make self-publishing easy. Lulu offers a variety of options from paperback and case wrapped to hardback and color, and CreateSpace offers only a paperback option. The price of a proof book on Lulu is pricier than a proof book published through Amazon’s CreateSpace, plus the expanded distribution through Lulu costs a ridiculous $75.00 to place it on Amazon and other sources. The expanded distribution for CreateSpace is priced only $25.00. These options are useful since it take days and days to publish books onto third party websites. Another plus about using Amazon’s is the option of it asking if you would like to buy a proof version of your book after your submission, but if you are confident your novel is perfect, you can publish it direct without being out of pocket. Lulu does not offer this feature.

A self-published author will gain credibility by setting up a personal website. It could be a blog or personalized used through a domain service like One.com. When the book is on Amazon, you can then set up an Amazon Associates account and earn money to advertise your product. Other useful social networking tools include Twitter, LinkedIn, Digg, StumbleUpon, and Facebook.

How To Publish and Market an eBook

Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) offers the easiest option to publish an eBook, however, there are a variety of publishing websites who also offer this service for a fee, but in my experience, it is fairly simple. All it requires is a little research beforehand. What is also great about Kindle is the new KDP Select facility that allows buyers to borrow eBooks through the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library and earn royalties. Smartphones and Kindle reading devices makes it easy to download books effortlessly. The only downside to publishing through Kindle Direct is knowing how to format the original document, since non-fiction books with pictures and bullet points etc can look strange on a Kindle reading device. It is best to consult a professional in this instance.

Advertising a self-published book or eBook does not require the expertise of a PR consultant. Publish your content on any of the above marketplaces, set up a website, and be proud of your accomplishments.
